Illinois enacts immigration protections amid Trump crackdowns

Illinois residents now have the right to sue federal immigration agents if they believe their civil rights have been violated, following the enactment of a new law signed by Governor JB Pritzker on Tuesday. The legislation comes in response to the Trump administration’s nationwide expansion of immigration enforcement.

The bill, approved by the state legislature last month and sent to Pritzker’s desk, limits immigration enforcement efforts outside state courthouses and allows plaintiffs to seek damages. Additionally, it prohibits schools from threatening to disclose the actual or perceived citizenship or immigration status of employees, students, or associated individuals to outside parties.

“With my signature today, we are protecting people and institutions that belong here in Illinois. Dropping your kid off at day care, going to the doctor, or attending your classes should not be a life-altering task,” said Governor Pritzker, a Democrat often mentioned as a potential 2028 presidential candidate.

Tricia McLaughlin, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security, criticized the move, claiming that Pritzker violated the U.S. Constitution and his oath of office by signing the bill into law.

The law took effect immediately and responds to the Trump administration’s aggressive immigration agenda targeting major U.S. cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York City. Trump has also proposed deploying National Guard members to Chicago in the name of anti-crime efforts, despite city data showing that most categories of violent crime have declined this year.

Illinois has consistently pushed back against federal attempts to send the National Guard and intensify immigration arrests within the state.

“Illinois — in the face of cruelty and intimidation — has chosen solidarity and support,” Pritzker said. “Donald Trump, Kristi Noem, and Gregory Bovino have tried to appeal to our lesser instincts. But the best of us are standing up to the worst of them,” he added, referring to the president and leaders of Homeland Security and the U.S. Border Patrol. -Jasper Ward/Reuters
