Double Olympic gold medallist Viktor Axelsen announced his retirement from professional badminton on Wednesday, citing ongoing back issues that have hindered his ability to train and compete at the highest level. The Danish star, who underwent back surgery in April of last year, expressed that the decision was not easy, but his body could no longer keep up with the demands of elite competition.

Axelsen, who dominated the sport for over 100 consecutive weeks as the world’s number one player, leaves behind an impressive legacy. He clinched Olympic gold in Tokyo and Paris and earned a bronze medal in Rio in 2016. In addition, Axelsen secured World Championship titles in both 2017 and 2022.

“Today is not an easy day for me,” Axelsen shared in a statement on social media. “Due to my recurrent back issues, I am no longer able to compete and train at the highest level.”

The decision to retire came after much reflection, with Axelsen admitting that accepting the reality of his situation was incredibly difficult. “But I have now reached a point where my body won’t allow me to continue,” he said.

Reflecting on his illustrious career, Axelsen added, “Since the day I picked up a racket, I knew my dream was to become the best in the world. I have given everything to this sport. It has never been just a career to me. It has been my life and I have left no stone unturned.”

Axelsen’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable era in badminton, with fans and fellow athletes alike celebrating his incredible achievements both on and off the court.
