Mike Trout is showcasing his remarkable power at Yankee Stadium, putting on a memorable display for the Los Angeles Angels. On the other side, Jose Caballero has been a late-inning hero for the New York Yankees. With both players stepping up, their managers are pleased as the teams head into the final game of a four-game series on Thursday afternoon. The Yankees have won two of the first three games.
Trout, who has blasted four home runs in the series, is 8-for-21 over his last six games, raising his batting average from .174 to .239. His performance has kept the Angels competitive, but their only victory came in a 7-1 rout on Tuesday, a game where Trout hit one of five homers for the Angels.
"He's tremendous," said Los Angeles manager Kurt Suzuki. "It's been fun to watch. He's been having great at-bats. Even his outs are good at-bats. Just got to keep it going, but his outs are fun to watch."
Trout’s four-homer series marks the fourth time in his career he has accomplished this feat.
Meanwhile, Aaron Judge, who has hit three homers in the series, is also making a strong impact. Judge blasted two homers on Monday, and the Yankees held off a late charge to win 11-10. Caballero, who has played a key role in the Yankees' recent victories, delivered a clutch two-run double in the ninth inning off Jordan Romano's slider, securing a 5-4 win on Wednesday.
"I've been really impressed watching these two future Hall of Famers put on a show this week," said New York manager Aaron Boone. "We’re hoping we can slow down the other show a little bit."
Caballero's rise has coincided with shortstop Anthony Volpe beginning a rehab assignment as he recovers from a shoulder injury. In his last five games, Caballero has tallied five hits and seven RBIs, including a game-winning play on Wednesday.
Trout has homered off multiple pitchers in the series, including Jake Bird, Camilo Doval, and Ryan Weathers. He will aim to extend his streak to five straight games when he faces left-hander Max Fried (2-0, 1.93 ERA) in Thursday's finale. Fried, who has never faced the Angels, has allowed three runs in each of his last two outings, with the Yankees suffering a 5-4 loss in 10 innings to Tampa Bay last Saturday.
The Angels had yet to announce their starting pitcher by Thursday morning, with the possibility of a bullpen game looming. After using four relievers on Monday, the Angels have seen strong performances from starters Reid Detmers and Jack Kochanowicz, who pitched seven-plus innings on Tuesday and 6 2/3 innings on Wednesday.
The stage is set for an exciting conclusion to this power-packed series at Yankee Stadium.
