Los Angeles Angels star outfielder Mike Trout is listed as day-to-day after escaping serious injury when a pitch struck his left hand during Sunday’s 8-7 extra-inning victory over the Seattle Mariners. X-rays on the hand came back negative.
Trout was hit by a 94-mph pitch from Mariners pitcher Casey Legumina in the eighth inning. He received attention from a team trainer at home plate, reached first base, and then left the game for a pinch runner.
"I knew it didn't feel good when it happened, and when I looked down, it was already swelled up," Trout said. "And when I couldn't get my (batting) glove off, (the trainer) was just like, ‘Go get it looked at.’"
This marks the second hit-by-pitch incident for Trout in the series, following Friday’s opener when he was struck in the left shoulder by a 96-mph pitch from Seattle’s Bryan Woo.
"I think we know where they're trying to get me out, (on) fastballs up and in," Trout said after Sunday’s game. "It's just frustrating. If you can't control it up there, you shouldn't do it. So it is what it is."
Trout, a three-time American League MVP, has struggled with injuries in recent seasons. He played in 130 games last season, but in the five seasons before that, he played more than 82 games only once.
Over 16 seasons and 1,658 games—all with the Angels—Trout is a career .294 hitter with a .976 OPS. He has two home runs this season, giving him 406 for his career, along with 1,021 RBIs.
The Angels will begin a three-game home series against the Atlanta Braves on Monday.
