Carson Kelly powered the Chicago Cubs with a three-run home run, while Nico Hoerner and Alex Bregman each drove in three runs as Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 10-4 on Tuesday night on the road.
Hoerner delivered an RBI single in the third inning, while Bregman added an RBI hit in the fifth. Both players then broke the game open in the sixth inning, each contributing a two-run single that extended the Cubs’ lead.
Ian Happ added an RBI double, and Michael Busch reached base four times with two hits and two walks as Chicago collected 15 hits in the win. The Cubs evened the three-game series at one win apiece, with the decisive game set for Wednesday night.
On the mound, Colin Rea improved to 2-0 after working six innings in relief of opener Riley Martin. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out five, with his only major mistake being a three-run homer surrendered to Edmundo Sosa in the second inning.
Sosa also scored later on a Trea Turner RBI single in the eighth, trimming Philadelphia’s deficit to 7-4. However, Kelly provided insurance for Chicago in the ninth with his first home run of the season.
Philadelphia starter Aaron Nola allowed three runs over five innings, but Tim Mayza struggled in relief, giving up four runs (three earned) while recording only one out as Chicago pulled away in the sixth inning. -Field Level Media/Reuters
