Pinch hitter Luis Torrens delivered a clutch two-RBI double in a four-run eighth inning Sunday afternoon, helping the visiting New York Mets rally for a 5-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants. The game also featured the first ejection of new Giants manager Tony Vitello.
After Logan Webb limited the Mets to a single run through seven innings, New York strung together five consecutive one-out hits off a pair of San Francisco relievers to take the lead and secure their third straight win following a series-opening loss Thursday.
Jorge Polanco sparked the rally with a one-out double off Keaton Winn (0-1), followed by a single and stolen base from Luis Robert Jr. Torrens, pinch hitting for Jared Young, who was 3-for-3, then delivered an opposite-field double to right off Erik Miller, putting the Mets ahead.
The Mets extended their lead when Matt Chapman’s throw on Mark Vientos’ infield hit went past first baseman Rafael Devers, allowing Torrens to score and Vientos to reach second. Marcus Semien then added an RBI double to left, making it 5-2.
Huascar Brazoban (1-0) earned the win after 1 1/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Kodai Senga. Luke Weaver retired the side in order in the eighth before Devin Williams secured his second save with the final three outs.
One of Brazoban’s four recorded outs came via an interference call on Giants batter Jerar Encarnacion, who was ruled outside the runner’s lane while running to first as Brazoban’s throw eluded Vientos. Replay suggested Encarnacion stayed in the correct path, but Vitello argued the batter’s lane did not affect the play and was ejected after a prolonged appeal.
The Giants had taken a 2-1 lead in the sixth, scoring twice to end Senga’s day. Chapman tied the game with a two-out RBI double, and Devers drove in the go-ahead run with a single.
Senga gave up two runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out seven. Webb allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings, walking one and striking out three.
For the Mets, Robert and Young each had three hits, while Polanco and Vientos had two apiece. The Mets outhit the Giants 13-7 in the homerless contest, leaving San Francisco at 1-6 at home this season.
