GOLF: Rahm eligible for Ryder Cup after agreeing deal with DP World Tour

Jon Rahm has reached an agreement with the DP World Tour that clears the way for him to remain eligible for Europe’s 2027 Ryder Cup team. The deal requires him to pay outstanding fines, withdraw appeals, and commit to selected DP World Tour events while continuing to compete on LIV Golf.

LONDON — Spain’s Jon Rahm will be eligible to compete in next year’s Ryder Cup after reaching an agreement with the DP World Tour to pay outstanding fines and participate in selected events this season.

Rahm’s status had been uncertain after he was not among a group of eight LIV Golf players granted conditional releases by the DP World Tour in February. His participation in future European events, including those tied to Ryder Cup qualification, had been in doubt.

In a statement, the DP World Tour confirmed that both sides had reached an agreement allowing Rahm to compete in conflicting LIV Golf tournaments for the remainder of the 2026 season under specific conditions.

“This involves payment of all outstanding fines accrued from 2024 to date, along with participation in agreed DP World Tour tournaments (outside the Majors) in the remainder of the 2026 season,” a tour spokesperson said.

The settlement reportedly requires Rahm to pay about 2.5 million pounds ($3.33 million) in fines for playing LIV events without permission, withdraw ongoing appeals, and commit to playing designated DP World Tour events.

Rahm had previously criticized the DP World Tour in March, accusing it of “extorting players” after discussions over dual participation between LIV Golf and traditional tours stalled.

On Tuesday, the former world No. 1 said the dispute had been resolved and tensions eased.

“We were able to reach an agreement. There were some concessions on both sides,” Rahm said ahead of a LIV Golf event in Washington, D.C. “That will not be a stress anymore.”

He added that while the next Ryder Cup is still a long way off, he is relieved to move forward without uncertainty regarding his eligibility. The 2027 edition will be held at Adare Manor from September 17 to 19.

Rahm also expressed his desire to continue supporting the DP World Tour and participate in more of its events moving forward.

Other LIV players, including Tyrrell Hatton, Laurie Canter, Thomas Detry, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk, Victor Perez, David Puig, and Elvis Smylie, have previously reached individual agreements allowing them to compete across both tours.

Rahm will now be eligible to earn Race to Dubai ranking points at next week’s PGA Championship and other DP World Tour events he enters during the 2026 season. -Reporting by Martyn HermanEditing by Toby Davis/Reuters
