Desmond Bane scored 35 points, including five in the final 18 seconds, to lead the Orlando Magic to a 128-122 victory over the visiting Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night.
Paulo Banchero contributed 25 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists, while Tristan da Silva added 23 points. Wendell Carter Jr. finished with a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds. The win extended Orlando’s streak to five games and moved the Magic into a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with the Toronto Raptors. Cleveland remains in fourth, three games ahead.
Bane hit a clutch 3-pointer and added two free throws after Cleveland had pulled within 122-120 on Donovan Mitchell’s three-pointer. There were 12 lead changes during the game, though the fourth quarter remained under Orlando’s control.
James Harden led the Cavaliers with 30 points, his highest total since joining Cleveland in a trade from the Los Angeles Clippers, along with five rebounds and eight assists. Mitchell added 25 points, and Keon Ellis chipped in 20 off the bench. Evan Mobley recorded 18 points and 13 rebounds but struggled at the line, making just 2 of 7 free throws.
The turning point came in the third quarter when Orlando scored seven straight points following a Cavaliers replay challenge. The Magic stretched their largest lead at that stage to 96-86. A technical foul was called on Cleveland’s Clark after he motioned to challenge a foul on Jett Howard. The review overturned the call to a block, and Bane converted the ensuing free throw and completed a three-point play.
Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson used a zone defense in the second quarter, sending the teams into halftime tied at 62. Banchero had 17 points, four rebounds, and five assists, while Mitchell and Harden each had 16 points. Bane and da Silva combined for 16 points in the first quarter, shooting 7 of 9 to give Orlando a 38-35 edge. Mitchell led all scorers with 12 points, and Harden was perfect from the field with eight points.
The Cavaliers had won the first two meetings between the teams by 14 and 16 points, with the final matchup of the season set for March 24 in Cleveland. A playoff matchup between the two teams remains a possibility as Orlando climbs the standings.
Orlando was without Franz Wagner (left high ankle sprain) and Anthony Black (abdominal muscle strain), while Cleveland missed Jarrett Allen (right knee tendonitis) and rookie Tyrese Proctor (right quadriceps strain) for the third consecutive game.
