NBA: Mavs' Anthony Davis won't undergo hand surgery, out at least 6 weeks

Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis will miss around six weeks with a left-hand injury but will not need surgery, the team confirmed after multiple reports suggested otherwise. Davis, who joined the Mavericks in the Luka Doncic trade, could return later this season, keeping trade talks alive.

Anthony Davis will not need surgery on his injured left hand, the Dallas Mavericks announced Tuesday evening after the star big man consulted with his physician.

The announcement comes after a day of conflicting reports, including speculation that Davis would require surgery to repair ligament damage. Davis himself took to X, formerly Twitter, to dispute those claims. “Lies! But y’all keep listening to them,” he wrote in one post.

Instead, the Mavericks confirmed that Davis underwent a medical evaluation, which determined that the injury is expected to heal in approximately six weeks without surgery.

According to ESPN, the Mavericks are still exploring trade possibilities for Davis, given that the 10-time All-Star could return later this season and contribute to a contender.

Davis sought multiple medical opinions after an MRI on Friday, following an injury sustained while defending Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen on a drive to the basket. Davis left the game with 2:08 remaining, visibly in pain and unable to defend Markkanen’s next shot.

Davis has yet to complete a full season with the Mavericks, who acquired him in a controversial trade that sent star Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Turning 33 in March, Davis is earning $54.1 million this season. He is set to make $58.5 million next season and holds a player option for $62.8 million in 2027–28.

This season, Davis has played in 20 games, adding to the nine games he appeared in last season. He is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game.
