Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Anthony Edwards is expected to miss multiple weeks after suffering a left knee injury during Saturday night’s 112-96 playoff win over the Denver Nuggets.
Per ESPN, Edwards was diagnosed Sunday with a bone bruise and a hyperextended knee. Further testing confirmed there is no ligament damage, and he is set to begin rehabilitation immediately.
Minnesota, the No. 6 seed, holds a 3-1 lead in its best-of-seven Western Conference series against the No. 3 Nuggets. The series resumes Monday night in Denver.
The Timberwolves’ path forward, however, has been complicated by additional injury setbacks.
Guard Donte DiVincenzo, Edwards’ backcourt partner, suffered a ruptured right Achilles just 79 seconds into Saturday’s game. He will undergo surgery Sunday in New York performed by Dr. Martin O’Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery and is out indefinitely.
Despite the absences, Minnesota received a breakout performance from Ayo Dosunmu, who scored 43 points off the bench. He shot 13-of-17 from the field, made all five of his three-point attempts, and was a perfect 12-of-12 from the free-throw line.
According to OptaSTATS, Dosunmu became the first player in NBA history to record at least 40 points while shooting at least 75% from the field, making five or more three-pointers without a miss, and converting at least 10 free throws without a miss in a playoff game.
“This is for Ant. This is for Donte,” Dosunmu said via Timberwolves social media after the game. “I hope for a speedy recovery for them.”
Acquired from the Chicago Bulls at the trade deadline, Dosunmu appeared in 24 regular-season games for Minnesota, averaging 14.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists. Through the current playoff series, he has stepped into a larger role, averaging a team-high 22.8 points while shooting 64% from the field.
Edwards led the Timberwolves during the regular season with 28.8 points per game and shot 39.9% from three-point range across 61 games. DiVincenzo started all 82 regular-season games, averaging 12.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists.
Timberwolves forward Julius Randle said the team still believes it has enough depth to close out the series despite the injuries.
“We’ve got more than enough talent in here to win,” Randle said. “We lost two guys who are big pieces to our team, but we’ve talked about it all year — you need depth in the playoffs to win.” -Field Level Media/Reuters
