Pat Riley, president of the Miami Heat, is focused on restoring the franchise to its playoff glory after the team missed the postseason for the first time since 2018-19. While celebrating his 81st birthday last month, Riley made it clear that he is far from stepping down, despite the team's disappointing performance this year.
"I'm not going to retire. I'm not going to resign," Riley said during a Monday interview. "I'm not going to step aside. When I came here almost 31 years ago, I have the same attitude as I had in that press conference on the Imagination. Period. I want another parade down Biscayne Blvd. It may come. It may not. It has always been my desire to win, to win big."
Riley reaffirmed that his goal is to bring another championship to Miami, emphasizing that retirement is not on the table unless uncontrollable circumstances arise. His only potential reason for stepping away would be if the ownership decided to "tank" in an effort to accumulate more draft picks. Miami hasn't been in the NBA lottery since 2018, but with this year's absence from the playoffs, the Heat find themselves once again vying for a lottery pick.
Miami’s playoff hopes ended earlier this month when the Charlotte Hornets defeated the Heat in the 9-10 play-in game, marking the team's first absence from the postseason in four years. But Riley remains firm in his belief that the team should not embrace a rebuild.
"You don't make radical changes right now, not in my philosophy," Riley said. "I am not going to tank. We are not going to lose. We are not going into the lottery and do that insanity because I will quit — if I ever get ordered to go down that road."
Riley continued, acknowledging that the Heat are not satisfied with their current roster and their performance but remain determined to improve. "We are just not good enough. We are not happy with it. This is the first time in those three years that we have an opportunity to do something with our roster, with our flexibility, with our players."
While Riley is committed to returning the Heat to prominence, he admitted that the ultimate decision lies with the franchise's owner, Micky Arison. He stressed that despite his influential role, Arison has the final say on personnel and organizational plans.
"There are times when he said, 'No. I don't think we should go down that road,'" Riley shared, referring to Arison’s role in decision-making. "And that is the way it is today. I don’t have final say here. I never had it. Never had it when I came, and quite frankly, I don’t think I want it."
Arison, who purchased the Heat in 1995, hired Riley to lead the team. And after 31 years with the franchise, Riley’s commitment to winning remains unwavering. Despite setbacks, Riley expressed that the frustration of missing the playoffs only fuels his desire to return to the top.
"I'm really pissed," Riley confessed. "I'm disappointed. Disgruntled. Just like everybody else in the organization that understands what we are about — about winning. The last three or four years, with the exception of the '23 season when we got all the way to the Finals, has been something that I am not, we are not proud of."
The Heat’s future remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: Pat Riley is determined to lead Miami back to championship contention. -Field Level Media/Reuters
