NFL: Patriots list Drake Maye as limited

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is listed as limited on the team's initial Super Bowl injury report with a sore right shoulder, joining wide receiver Mack Hollins, while three others are expected to miss practice entirely. Maye, 23, has led the Patriots to a 17-3 record and could become the youngest QB to win a Super Bowl with a win over the Seahawks.

The New England Patriots’ first injury report ahead of the Super Bowl featured a surprise name: quarterback Drake Maye.

Although the team did not hold a practice on Wednesday, NFL rules required a projected injury report to be released. Maye was listed as a limited participant due to a sore right shoulder.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel addressed the report on Tuesday, saying, “I think that everybody, including Drake, is not 100% at this part of the year. We'll do everything that we can to help our players be prepared and get ready for this game.”

Three other Patriots were projected to miss the session entirely if the team had practiced on Wednesday: linebackers Harold Landry III (knee) and Robert Spillane (ankle), and tackle Thayer Munford Jr. (knee/illness). Spillane sustained his injury during New England’s 10-7 AFC Championship win over the Denver Broncos, a game Landry missed.

Wide receiver Mack Hollins (abdomen) joined Maye on the limited list.

Maye, 23, has started every game this season, leading the Patriots to a 17-3 record, including playoff wins against the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and Denver Broncos. He topped the NFL with a 72.0% completion rate, a 113.5 passer rating, and a 77.1 QBR, throwing for 4,394 yards, 31 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. In the postseason, Maye has thrown four touchdown passes and two interceptions.

A Super Bowl victory over the Seattle Seahawks in Santa Clara, Calif., on Feb. 8 would make Maye the youngest quarterback ever to win a Super Bowl.
