Cam York scored at 17:32 of overtime to lift the Philadelphia Flyers into the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 on Wednesday.
After winning the first three games of the best-of-seven series, the Flyers dropped Games 4 and 5 and struggled to generate consistent offense in Game 6. Still, York delivered in the biggest moment, scoring his first career playoff goal to send Philadelphia into a second-round matchup with the Carolina Hurricanes.
Following a faceoff win in the offensive zone, York fired a wrist shot from the right point that threaded through traffic, struck the right post, and slipped past Pittsburgh goaltender Arturs Silovs. Silovs finished with 31 saves, while Flyers goalie Dan Vladar stopped 42 shots to record his second shutout of the series.
Late in overtime, Philadelphia nearly ended it earlier when Porter Martone’s shot toward an open net was blocked by Silovs’ stick lying on the ice. The Flyers, however, secured the win less than a minute later on York’s decisive strike.
Golden Knights 5, Mammoth 4 (2 OT)
Brett Howden scored a short-handed goal at 5:28 of the second overtime as the Vegas Golden Knights edged Utah 5-4 to take a 3-2 lead in their Western Conference first-round series in Las Vegas.
Pavel Dorofeyev led Vegas with a hat trick, including a 6-on-5 equalizer with 52.7 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. Shea Theodore added a goal and an assist, while Jack Eichel contributed two assists. Carter Hart made 34 saves for the Golden Knights.
For Utah, John Marino, Lawson Crouse, Dylan Guenther, and Michael Carcone all scored, and Clayton Keller had two assists. Karel Vejmelka stopped 31 shots in the loss.
Canadiens 3, Lightning 2
Alexandre Texier scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period as visiting Montreal held off Tampa Bay 3-2 in Game 5 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.
With the win, the Canadiens moved ahead 3-2 in the best-of-seven matchup and will return home to Montreal for Game 6 on Friday.
Montreal goaltender Jakub Dobes made 38 saves, while Brendan Gallagher and Kirby Dach also scored. Andrei Vasilevskiy stopped 21 shots for the Lightning, who got goals from Dominic James and Jake Guentzel.
