Jordan Martinook redeemed himself after an earlier missed opportunity in overtime, scoring the game-winner with 6:07 left in the second overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals on Monday at PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C.
Martinook's decisive goal came as he surged down the slot to end the game, giving the Hurricanes a commanding 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series.
"We did our job," said Martinook. "We won our two at home, and now we go up there and they're going to try to do the same."
The Hurricanes’ early offense was provided by Logan Stankoven and Sebastian Aho, who both found the net in regulation. Frederik Andersen was stellar in goal, making 37 saves to secure the win for Carolina.
For Ottawa, Drake Batherson and Dylan Cozens were the goal-scorers, with defenseman Jake Sanderson assisting on both tallies. Goalie Linus Ullmark turned in a heroic performance, stopping 43 shots in a valiant effort to steal a victory for the Senators.
"Linus kept us in it there, especially with some big saves in the second period," Senators coach Travis Green said. "And I really liked our game after that."
The game had its share of drama, including a wild sequence in the first overtime. Carolina thought they had won it when Mark Jankowski scored with 2:42 remaining, but a video review overturned the goal due to an offside call, resetting the clock to just over three minutes. Martinook was awarded a penalty shot as part of the sequence, but Ullmark denied him, prolonging the game.
"I didn’t feel very good about myself after that penalty shot," Martinook admitted. "The intermission felt really long… It was going to be a long night if that penalty shot came back to bite me."
Carolina head coach Rod Brind'Amour commented, "We make it exciting. That’s for sure."
The game, played at a frenetic pace, featured stellar goaltending at both ends, with Andersen and Ullmark alternating in making crucial saves. Ottawa’s Tim Stutzle nearly ended the game in overtime, but his shot rang off the post.
The scoring began early in the first period, with Stankoven converting on a power play at 6:31 off a pass from Taylor Hall, who was behind the net. Stankoven has now scored the first goal in both games of the series. Ottawa's Brady Tkachuk was in the penalty box for roughing.
Aho doubled Carolina's lead at 7:50 of the second period, capitalizing on a fast break after receiving a pass from Jordan Staal. Ullmark kept Ottawa within reach, particularly with a critical save on Hall’s blast from the point that prevented the Hurricanes from extending their lead.
Ottawa, which had failed to score in the first 90 minutes of the series, broke through in the second period with two goals in just under six minutes. Batherson scored on a rebound, while Cozens tied the game with a strike at 16:40.
The third period was a tense affair, with both teams exchanging chances but unable to break the deadlock. The Senators outshot Carolina 8-5 in the scoreless third, which was played without a penalty being called.
With the victory, the Hurricanes will look to build on their momentum when the series shifts to Ottawa for Game 3 on Thursday night.
"We had a lot of chances in overtime," Green said. "In the first half of the game, we took a couple of chances that we don’t usually take, and it led to some opportunities for Carolina. But overall, I liked our game."
Game 3 is set for Thursday in Ottawa, where the Senators will aim to rebound and make the series a tight battle. -Field Level Media/Reuters
