After securing their first Stanley Cup playoff victory in franchise history, the Utah Mammoth will look to capitalize on the momentum when they host the Vegas Golden Knights for Game 3 of their best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series on Friday night in Salt Lake City.
Logan Cooley's third-period goal at 14:00 gave the Golden Knights a 3-2 victory in Game 2, evening the series at 1-1. Cooley's goal marked a key moment in the game, and he earned the distinction of becoming the youngest U.S.-born player in NHL history to score in each of his first two career playoff games. The previous record was held by Mammoth captain Clayton Keller.
Utah head coach Andre Tourigny reflected on the team's performance after Game 2, expressing satisfaction with the outcome, but emphasized that the team was not getting ahead of themselves. "It was just business as usual," Tourigny said. "We're happy, obviously. We achieved what we wanted. It was a little bit like when we clinched the playoff spot. Guys were like, 'Ok, good. We did what we worked to do.'"
Dylan Guenther contributed a goal and an assist, while MacKenzie Weegar also found the back of the net for Utah. Kailer Yamamoto added two assists, and goaltender Karel Vejmelka stopped 19 shots to secure his first career playoff win.
Despite the excitement, Tourigny kept the team focused. "There was a lot of pride, guys were happy about the game, but at the same time they were even-keeled," he added. "That's important because if you get carried away one way or another, that can have a long-term effect."
For Vegas, Mark Stone and Ivan Barbashev scored in the loss, while Jack Eichel recorded two assists. Goaltender Carter Hart made 26 saves, but the Golden Knights were unable to secure the win.
Mitch Marner also registered an assist in the defeat, becoming the sixth player in Golden Knights history to earn a point in each of his first two playoff games with the team.
Golden Knights head coach John Tortorella, with two days off between Games 2 and 3, gave his team Wednesday off to regroup. He acknowledged the need for improvement after Game 2, stating, "We had some good minutes, some bad minutes — just always trying to get better. When you play a series, there's ebbs and flows. You feel good about things at certain times, and other things you need to work on."
With the loss, Vegas fell to 6-6 all-time in Game 2s. However, the Golden Knights have an 8-3 series record after taking a 1-0 lead.
"We have some things we need to improve on after Game 2, and that's what we'll work on as coaches and meet with the team [on Thursday] about it," Tortorella added.
As the series heads to Salt Lake City tied 1-1, history shows that the winner of Game 3 has a strong advantage. In best-of-seven series tied at 1-1, the Game 3 victor holds a 245-124 all-time series record (.664). Furthermore, teams that won Game 3 in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs went on to win five of six series.
The Golden Knights and Mammoth split their regular-season meetings in Salt Lake City, with Vegas winning 4-1 on Nov. 20 and Utah responding with a 5-1 victory just four days later.
Friday night's Game 3 promises to be a pivotal matchup as both teams aim to take control of the series.
