NHL: John Gibson, Wings blank Canucks, move atop Atlantic

John Gibson’s 39-save shutout lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 4-0 win over the Vancouver Canucks, pushing them into first place in the Atlantic Division. Around the league, Dennis Hildeby, Yegor Sharangovich and Joel Eriksson Ek also delivered standout performances in key victories for their teams.

John Gibson stopped all 39 shots he faced for his first shutout as a member of the Detroit Red Wings, leading the team to a 4-0 win over the host Vancouver Canucks on Monday. The victory moved Detroit into first place in the Atlantic Division.


The shutout marked the 25th of Gibson’s career and his first since Jan. 4, 2023, when he guided the Anaheim Ducks to a 2-0 victory over the Dallas Stars. It was also the fourth time he blanked the Canucks, the most shutouts he has recorded against any NHL opponent.


James van Riemsdyk, Andrew Copp, Nate Danielson and Dylan Larkin scored for the Red Wings, while defenseman Axel Sandlin-Pellikka added two assists. Detroit extended its point streak to five games (3-0-2) and earned its second straight win.


For Vancouver, Kevin Lankinen turned away 10 of 13 shots before being replaced by rookie Nikita Tolopilo at the start of the third period. Tolopilo made six saves in relief. The Canucks have now dropped eight of their past 10 games (2-7-1).


Maple Leafs 2, Lightning 0


Dennis Hildeby made 29 saves to secure his first career shutout as Toronto defeated visiting Tampa Bay.


Morgan Rielly opened the scoring in the first period, and Auston Matthews sealed the win with an empty-net goal with one second left. The Maple Leafs have won four of their past five games.


With Andrei Vasilevskiy placed on injured reserve earlier in the day due to an undisclosed injury, Jonas Johansson started for Tampa Bay and stopped 22 shots. The Lightning have lost four straight and have been shut out in consecutive games to begin a four-game road trip.


Flames 7, Sabres 4


Yegor Sharangovich scored twice and added an assist, while Nazem Kadri posted a goal and two assists as Calgary powered to a season-high goal output in a win over Buffalo.


Yan Kuznetsov registered a goal and an assist, and Rasmus Andersson, Jonathan Huberdeau and Mikael Backlund also scored for the Flames, who extended their winning streak to three games. Matt Coronato collected two assists, and goaltender Dustin Wolf stopped 25 shots.


For the Sabres, Rasmus Dahlin recorded a goal and an assist. Tage Thompson, Owen Power and Alex Tuch each scored as Buffalo fell to its third straight loss. Josh Norris and Jason Zucker had two assists apiece. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 17 saves on 22 shots before Alex Lyon came in for the third period, stopping four shots.


Kings 4, Mammoth 2


Joel Armia scored twice to help Los Angeles defeat Utah in Salt Lake City.


Adrian Kempe had a goal and an assist, Anze Kopitar added a goal, and Kevin Fiala contributed two assists. Darcy Kuemper made 19 saves as the Kings notched their second straight win following a 2-3-3 stretch.


Clayton Keller had a goal and an assist for the Mammoth, while Dylan Guenther also scored. Karel Vejmelka finished with 23 saves as Utah dropped its sixth loss in eight games.


Wild 4, Kraken 1


Joel Eriksson Ek tallied a goal and two assists to lead Minnesota past host Seattle.


Marcus Johansson, Kirill Kaprizov and Vladimir Tarasenko also scored for the Wild, and Filip Gustavsson stopped 23 shots as Minnesota closed its four-game road trip with a 2-2-0 record.
