President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said the Philippines is working to expand opportunities for Filipino athletes to compete globally.

The President issued the statement after his meeting with Qatari sports official Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani of the Olympic Council of Asia.

The sheikh also serves as president of the Qatar Olympic Committee, which oversees sports development initiatives in his country.

The Qatari sports official made a courtesy call in Malacañang Palace on May 1, marking the first high-level engagement between the Olympic Council of Asia and the Marcos administration.

Both sides sought to strengthen cooperation in sports development and explore potential hosting opportunities.

According to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), discussions centered on boosting cooperation in athlete training, strengthening institutional partnerships, and increasing access to regional programs under the OCA.

Both parties also explored ways to expand collaboration through training initiatives and shared resources aimed at supporting Filipino athletes.

Marcos said continued investment in sports remains a priority to help athletes represent the country and inspire future generations.

“We will keep investing in our athletes so they can carry our fag with pride and inspire the next generation,” the president said.

HOSTING OPPORTUNITIES

Meanwhile, Marcos and the Sheikh also discussed the possibility of the Philippines hosting future regional and international sporting events.

“This shows growing confidence in the Philippines as a regional sports partner,” Marcos said.

The PCO emphasized the importance of deeper engagement with the OCA to further strengthen sports development efforts.
