Senate Deputy Minority Leader Joel Villanueva has formally commended the Gilas Pilipinas Women’s Basketball Team following their historic silver medal finish at the FIBA 3x3 Asia Cup 2026.
Calling the achievement a breakthrough for Philippine sports, the senator filed Senate Resolution No. 360 to honor the national team members: Afril Bernardino, Kacey Dela Rosa, Cheska Apag, and Mikka Cacho.
The team’s podium finish marks a significant improvement from their fourth-place standing in 2025.
In the quarterfinals, the Philippines stunned second seed Mongolia with a score of 15–12, showcasing offensive efficiency and defensive discipline.
The Gilas Women secured a hard-fought victory over Japan, 21-19, in the semifinals to advance to the final match against the strong Australian team.
Villanueva lauded the squad's resilience and skill, specifically noting Afril Bernardino’s inclusion in the Team of the Tournament.
He highlighted that victories over powerhouse nations like Japan and Mongolia demonstrate the rapid development of Philippine women’s basketball on the global stage.
In his resolution, Villanueva—a former member of the 1994 Philippine Youth Team—emphasized that this success serves as an inspiration to all Filipino athletes, particularly women.
He also extended his congratulations to the men’s 3x3 team for reaching the quarterfinals, their best performance since 2022.
The Senator reaffirmed his commitment to national sports development, stating that the dedication of the players and coaches reflects the perseverance and patriotism of the Filipino people.
As he noted, "Kulang man po tayo minsan sa tangkad, higante naman ang puso ng ating mga atletang Pinoy para mabigyang karangalan ang ating mga kababayan."
