Coach Vincent Kompany praised Bayern Munich's resilience after the German side secured a 2-1 victory at Real Madrid in Tuesday's first leg of their Champions League quarter-final.
Bayern remain unbeaten in their last 14 matches across all competitions and lead the race to defend their Bundesliga title. With a chance to reach their second consecutive Champions League semi-final, Bayern will host Real Madrid on April 15 for the return leg.
"The most important thing for us is to maintain our momentum," Kompany said in an interview with TNT Sports. "Real Madrid will give us a tough game—they're a team that can always do something special."
Bayern’s last victory over Real Madrid came in 2017, when they won 2-1 in Madrid to level the quarter-final after a first-leg defeat at home. However, Real Madrid went on to score twice in extra time and advanced to the semi-finals.
The last time Bayern won a two-legged tie against Real was in the 2012 Champions League semi-finals, when the German side triumphed on penalties.
"While we have a lot of respect for our opponents, we also have a lot of confidence," Kompany added. "We've earned the right to be confident. We’ve also earned the right to demand more, even in these tough matches... and we’ll continue to push for a good result."
