MADRID – Bayern Munich took control of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday, edging Real Madrid 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu in a thrilling first-leg encounter.
Vincent Kompany’s side struck just before halftime when Serge Gnabry threaded a precise pass to Luis Diaz, who slipped behind the offside trap and fired low past goalkeeper Andriy Lunin in the 41st minute.
Bayern doubled their lead seconds after the restart, as Michael Olise’s square found Harry Kane, who finished calmly from the edge of the box following a swift counter-attack.
Real improved after the hour mark. Kylian Mbappe pulled one back in the 74th minute, turning in Trent Alexander-Arnold’s low cross at the far post. However, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer denied both Mbappe and Vinicius Jr. with a series of sharp saves as Real pressed for an equalizer that never came.
The winners of this two-legged tie will face either Paris Saint-Germain or Liverpool, who play their first leg on Wednesday, in the semi-finals.
"We came out for the second half and conceded a goal straight away. Both goals we conceded were gifts. Both sides had plenty of chances, but Bayern’s best player today was Neuer. In the end, that’s how it goes," Real Madrid defender Antonio Ruediger told Movistar Plus.
Bayern dominated from the start and nearly opened the scoring in the ninth minute, only for Alvaro Carreras to clear Dayot Upamecano’s point-blank effort off the line. The visitors controlled more than 65% of possession in the first half, while Real dropped into a deep defensive block, aiming to break on the counter.
Despite this, Real created chances. Vinicius forced a superb one-handed save from Neuer in the 17th minute, tipping away a low drive from the edge of the box. Mbappe also squandered two openings shortly after and was denied again in the 29th minute by another outstanding reflex save from Neuer.
Bayern broke the deadlock in the 41st minute after a slick passing move between Kane and Gnabry. Gnabry slipped a perfectly weighted ball to Diaz, who finished low into the right post. Seconds into the second half, Bayern doubled their lead when Carreras lost possession in midfield, allowing Kane to score his 49th goal of the season and 11th in the Champions League.
Real responded with urgency. Vinicius raced through after a defensive error in the 60th minute but dragged his shot wide. Neuer then made another fine save to deny Mbappe in the 65th minute and watched as the French forward sent another effort wide moments later.
Mbappe scored in the 74th minute, with the referee ruling the ball had crossed the line despite Neuer getting a hand to it. Bayern’s goalkeeper remained defiant, blocking a fierce Vinicius strike in the 81st minute and holding an Eder Militao curler shortly afterward, while Mbappe missed another close-range attempt in the 89th.
Despite missed chances on the counter, Bayern heads home with a slender yet significant advantage after an entertaining first leg.
