LONDON – Brentford striker Igor Thiago marked his first call-up to the Brazil national team by scoring his 19th Premier League goal of the season, but the home side had to settle for a 2-2 draw against struggling Wolverhampton Wanderers on Monday.
Brentford remain seventh with 45 points from 30 games, missing a chance to close in on the Champions League qualification spots. Wolves, with 17 points from 31 games, sit 12 points below the safety zone at the bottom of the table.
Michael Kayode gave Brentford the lead before Thiago doubled their advantage in the first half, after being named in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad earlier in the day. At that point, Brentford looked set for a comfortable win.
However, Wolves showed their recent improvement, with Adam Armstrong pulling one back just before halftime. Substitute Tolu Arokodare equalized in the 78th minute, and the visitors also struck the woodwork twice as they pushed for a late winner.
“We can take positives from the second half. The first two goals for them were not good enough,” Armstrong told Sky Sports. “The message at halftime was just to keep going and get another goal. We know where we are in the league—it is not good enough. To get my first goal for Wolves was special, but the three points would have been more important.”
Brentford opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Kayode headed in Keane Lewis-Potter’s cross. Thiago added the second after Dango Ouattara’s brilliant first touch from goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher’s long ball set him up for a tap-in.
Thiago almost made it 3-0, but his header hit the post. Wolves responded just before halftime, with Armstrong finishing neatly from the edge of the box.
The second half saw Wolves dominate early, with Armstrong hitting the post from close range. Arokodare, on the pitch for just three minutes, headed in the equalizer from Joao Gomes’ cross. He later struck the crossbar as Wolves chased a winner, while Brentford’s Reiss Nelson missed a late headed chance.
