Brighton & Hove Albion secured a dominant 3-0 victory over Chelsea at home on Tuesday, piling further misery on the struggling London club. Ferdi Kadioglu opened the scoring early, and second-half goals from Jack Hinshelwood and Danny Welbeck sealed the win, lifting Brighton to sixth in the Premier League standings.
Kadioglu struck in the third minute, converting a flicked-on corner with a composed side-footed finish. Chelsea had a chance to equalize shortly after, but Hinshelwood missed an open goal in the 18th minute, with his weak shot cleared off the line. Despite a lack of attacking threat in the first half, Chelsea responded after halftime with the introduction of Alejandro Garnacho, who injected some life into their attack. However, it was Brighton who capitalized once again.
Hinshelwood found the back of the net in the 56th minute, and Welbeck added a third in the final moments to condemn Chelsea to a fifth consecutive league loss, failing to score in all of those matches. With just one win in their last nine league outings, Chelsea is now in serious danger of missing out on European football next season.
The defeat leaves Chelsea sitting two points behind Brighton in the table, with their hopes of recovery growing slimmer unless they can reverse their poor form.
