LIVERPOOL, England – Ousmane Dembele delivered a match-winning performance, scoring twice to seal Paris Saint-Germain's (PSG) 2-0 victory over Liverpool on Tuesday night at a rain-soaked Anfield. The win secured PSG’s 4-0 aggregate triumph in their Champions League quarter-final tie, booking their spot in the semi-finals for the fifth time in seven seasons.

Despite sustained pressure from Liverpool in the second half, PSG held firm, bolstered by the advantage they gained from a dominant first leg in Paris last week. The holders weathered a storm of noise and energy from the home crowd, with the Reds pushing hard for a comeback. However, PSG showed composure under pressure, showing the maturity of a team that has gained invaluable experience in Europe’s premier competition.

Dembele’s breakthrough came in the 72nd minute when he latched onto a precise ball from Bradley Barcola and curled a shot into the bottom corner past Giorgi Mamardashvili from 20 yards. The French winger, who had already struck in last season’s Champions League campaign, sealed his double in the dying seconds of the match, slotting home another assist from Barcola.

Looking ahead, PSG will face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid in the semi-finals, with the German side leading 2-1 after their first leg, to be decided Wednesday.

"We managed to stay strong and defended well," PSG defender Marquinhos told Canal+. "You can see how the team has matured. We've gained experience."

VAR Drama and Injury Concerns

The match was marred by controversy and injury. In the second half, boos rang around Anfield after a penalty decision was overturned by VAR. The penalty had been awarded when Willian Pacho clattered into Alexis Mac Allister in the box, but the review deemed the challenge to be fair.

Liverpool’s troubles were compounded by a worrying injury to forward Hugo Ekitike, who went down unchallenged in the first half, clutching his Achilles tendon in apparent agony. Ekitike was carried off the pitch in tears, leaving his status for the remainder of the season in doubt. Liverpool boss Arne Slot remained cautious about the injury, saying, "It’s not too good... let's wait and see."

Dembele’s First Half Misses and Liverpool’s Missed Opportunities

PSG were the dominant force in the first half, although Dembele did squander a few earlier opportunities, including a shot that flew well over the bar and another that Mamardashvili was able to punch clear under pressure. However, the floodgates opened after Dembele’s first goal.

Liverpool started the second half with renewed intent. Ryan Gravenberch, Cody Gakpo, Joe Gomez, and Mac Allister all had decent chances to get Liverpool on the scoreboard but were unable to capitalize. Milos Kerkez looked set to score after a brilliant assist from Mohamed Salah, who was making his final Champions League appearance for Liverpool. But the Hungarian sent the ball wide, further frustrating the home side.

Dembele’s Impact and Liverpool’s Frustration

Dembele's goal, scored against the run of play, virtually sealed the tie and all but ended Liverpool’s hopes of a miraculous comeback. With their Champions League aspirations dashed, Liverpool’s focus will now shift to their remaining Premier League fixtures.

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate reflected on the defeat, stating: "The game today meant a lot of things because against PSG, who are a bit better than last season, we have to build from that and realize how good we can be. It is minimum standard for Liverpool to play Champions League. We have six games left (in the Premier League) and we have to give all in those six games. We knew we could do something special at Anfield... this is football. It’s sad."

As PSG celebrated their progression to the semi-finals, Liverpool were left to regroup and prepare for their remaining domestic challenges.
