Los Angeles FC (5-2-1, 16 points) advanced to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions Cup last Tuesday, but their momentum was dampened by a 4-1 loss at home to the San Jose Earthquakes on Sunday. The defeat saw LAFC overwhelmed by a flurry of second-half goals, marking a rare misstep for the team.
"I have been here many times praising us, but (Sunday) was not good," said LAFC head coach Marc Dos Santos. "We have to take the game as a lesson and move forward. If I only talk about tiredness (from Champions Cup), that's an excuse. It was not good. We have to see why and try to improve on Wednesday."
In the defeat, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris conceded his first goals of the season, ending a remarkable 593-minute scoreless streak. Meanwhile, star player Heung-Min Son continues to search for his first league goal of the season, though he has netted twice in Champions Cup play. Denis Bouanga remains the club's standout performer, leading with four goals and four assists in MLS play, while Son has contributed seven assists.
Looking ahead, LAFC will need to quickly regroup as they prepare for their next challenge in the Champions Cup semifinals.
Colorado Rapids Struggle with Inconsistency in Loss to Inter Miami
The Colorado Rapids (4-4-0, 12 points) showcased both their attacking strength and defensive vulnerabilities in a 3-2 home loss to Inter Miami on Saturday. Despite a strong offensive performance, which saw the Rapids tally 15 shots compared to Miami’s five, it was Lionel Messi's two goals, including the game-winner in the 79th minute, that handed Colorado the loss.
"I saw a team that performed like a big team with a proper mentality and huge personality," said Rapids head coach Matt Wells. "That gives me massive hope that if we keep building and stick on this path, it won't be long before you're asking me a question about us being the top team around Vancouver and LAFC."
Despite the defeat, the Rapids' offensive prowess remains a highlight of their season. With 21 goals scored, they rank second in MLS, just one goal behind the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps.
Rafael Navarro has been the driving force behind Colorado's attack, leading the team with six goals and four assists, including a goal against Inter Miami.
The loss to Miami came before a record crowd of 75,824 at the home of the Denver Broncos, marking the second-largest attendance in MLS history. This came just a week after the Rapids' dominant 6-2 home win over the Houston Dynamo, in which Navarro netted twice.
However, the Rapids' defensive struggles continue to be a concern, having conceded 15 goals, with only three teams in the Western Conference allowing more.
As both teams gear up for their upcoming matches, LAFC and Colorado will need to shake off recent disappointments and focus on the road ahead.
