LIVERPOOL — Manchester City’s Premier League title hopes suffered a major setback on Monday as they dropped valuable points at Everton, needing Jeremy Doku’s stoppage-time strike to secure a dramatic 3-3 draw.
City, with 71 points from 34 matches, now trail league leaders Arsenal by five points, although they still have a game in hand. The chaotic contest saw Everton mount a strong comeback after capitalizing on a costly defensive error from City defender Marc Guehi.
As it stands, City must rely on Arsenal—who have 76 points from 35 games—to slip up in one of their final three matches to keep their title hopes alive.
“It’s better than losing. But it’s not in our hands,” City manager Pep Guardiola told Sky Sports. “Before it was, now it’s not. We have games left. We will see what happens.”
City appeared headed for defeat, with some traveling supporters already leaving the stadium in disappointment, when Doku—who also scored the opener in the 43rd minute—produced a stunning equalizer. In the 97th minute, he curled a powerful effort into the top corner from the edge of the box to rescue a point.
The dramatic finish capped a chaotic second half that included a Thierno Barry brace and a goal from Jake O’Brien for Everton.
City had controlled much of the first half and went into halftime ahead after Doku’s brilliant strike into the top corner left goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with no chance.
However, Guardiola’s side unraveled after the break. Everton’s first goal came in the 68th minute when Barry intercepted a poor back pass from Guehi intended for goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and calmly finished. The offside flag was initially raised, but the goal stood as the ball had not been played by a teammate.
O’Brien then headed home from a corner in the 73rd minute to give Everton the lead, before Barry completed his brace in the 81st minute following another defensive lapse.
“It’s always a pleasure to play against a big team like Manchester City,” Barry said. “We had to settle for a draw, so we need to keep pushing because there are three games left.”
City refused to give up, with Erling Haaland pulling one back in the 83rd minute after breaking through Everton’s defense and lifting the ball over Pickford.
Doku’s late equalizer extended City’s unbeaten run in the league to 12 matches.
Everton remain 10th in a tightly contested mid-table battle for European qualification next season.
“I think it’s going to be tough,” Everton manager David Moyes said. “In the last couple of games we’ve lost points late on, and today we’ve drawn. It could and probably will have an impact on our final position.”
