MADRID — Martin Satriano’s brilliant first-half volley secured a 1-0 victory for Getafe over Real Madrid in LaLiga on Monday, leaving leaders Barcelona four points clear at the top of the table.
Real dominated possession from the start but failed to convert chances, repeatedly running into a disciplined Getafe defense. The match turned in the 39th minute when a half-cleared cross fell to Satriano at the edge of the box. The striker unleashed a fierce volley into the top left corner, giving Getafe the lead.
Frustration boiled over in stoppage time. Substitute Franco Mastantuono received a straight red card for dissent, while Adrian Liso also saw red for the visitors.
Barcelona now lead the standings with 64 points, followed by Real Madrid on 60. Getafe sit 11th with 32 points.
Real manager Álvaro Arbeloa, missing Kylian Mbappé, Jude Bellingham, and Éder Militão through injury, made several changes, handing 18-year-old Thiago Pitarch his first senior start. Getafe disrupted Real’s rhythm early with tactical fouls, slowing the home side’s attacks.
Real came close in the 13th minute when Vinícius Jr raced clear on a counter, only for goalkeeper David Soria to make a sharp save. Soria impressed again in the 24th minute with a one-handed stop to deny Arda Güler after a dazzling solo run.
The decisive moment arrived when Satriano struck his unstoppable volley, marking his seventh appearance since joining on loan from Olympique Lyonnais in January.
Real pressed in the second half, introducing Dani Carvajal, Dean Huijsen, and Rodrygo, but could not break down Getafe’s deep five-man defense. Antonio Rüdiger headed close from a corner, and Rodrygo fired just wide, yet Getafe held firm.
Mastantuono’s red card capped a humiliating night for Real, who suffered their first home defeat to Getafe in 18 years. -Reporting by Fernando KallasEditing by Christian Radnedge/Reuters
