The "Finalissima" match between Spain and Argentina in Doha is now uncertain after the Qatar Football Association suspended all soccer tournaments indefinitely. The move comes amid regional tensions following U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran and retaliatory missile strikes across the Arabian Peninsula.
The high-profile match, set for March 27 at Doha's Lusail Stadium, was to feature European Championship winners Spain against Copa America champions Argentina, with stars like Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi expected to play.
In a statement on Sunday, the Qatar Football Association said, "Qatar Football Association announces the postponement of all tournaments, competitions and matches, effective from today and until further notice. The new dates for the resumption of competitions will be announced in due course through the Association's official channels."
The final decision on whether the "Finalissima" will be postponed rests with event organisers UEFA and CONMEBOL.
The Asian Football Confederation has already postponed Champions League Elite fixtures, including matches in the Champions League Two and Challenge League.
Countries across the Middle East have remained on high alert since Saturday, when U.S. and Israeli air strikes targeted Iran’s military infrastructure. Iran responded with attacks on U.S. targets in the region, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar.
On Sunday, Qatar’s interior ministry reported a fire in an industrial area after debris from an intercepted missile fell nearby.
