Sunderland has strongly condemned the online racist abuse aimed at striker Brian Brobbey following the team's 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday in the Premier League.
Brobbey was at the heart of a key incident when Tottenham captain Cristian Romero collided with his own goalkeeper, Antonin Kinsky, after being pressured by the Sunderland forward. Romero was forced to leave the field in tears, while Kinsky finished the match with his head heavily bandaged.
In a statement, Sunderland expressed their full support for Brobbey, saying, "We stand firmly with Brian and offer him our full and unwavering support."
The club also highlighted that the abuse Brobbey faced was part of a troubling pattern, noting that Romaine Mundle and Lutsharel Geertruida had experienced similar mistreatment in recent weeks.
“The club has reported this incident to the Premier League, the relevant social media platforms, and the police, and we expect swift action to be taken against those responsible," Sunderland stated.
With the win, Sunderland climbed to 10th place in the Premier League standings and will next face fourth-placed Aston Villa on Sunday.
