PARIS — Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca continued his remarkable run at the French Open, defeating two-time runner-up and 15th seed Casper Ruud 7-5, 7-6(8), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in his career.
The 19-year-old rising star built on his impressive momentum after rallying from two sets down to eliminate Novak Djokovic in the third round, further establishing himself as a serious contender in an unpredictable tournament.
Playing under the lights on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Fonseca delivered an outstanding performance, showcasing powerful groundstrokes from both wings. He secured the opening set by breaking Ruud's serve in the 12th game, drawing loud cheers from the Paris crowd.
The second set featured an early exchange of breaks before both players settled into a fierce battle of powerful shot-making. Ruud held three set points in the tiebreak but was unable to convert them, allowing Fonseca to edge the set and take a commanding two-set lead.
The victory in the tiebreak energized the crowd, including Brazilian tennis legend Gustavo Kuerten, a three-time French Open champion, who watched as fans erupted in celebration.
Ruud responded in the third set, finding a way to extend the contest by claiming the set and keeping his hopes alive as the match stretched into the early hours of Monday morning.
However, Fonseca regained control in the fourth set, breaking Ruud twice as the atmosphere inside the stadium reached fever pitch. The world No. 30 closed out the match in style to secure another memorable victory.
Fonseca will next face Czech player Jakub Mensik for a place in the semifinals.
