MELBOURNE – Australian Open favourite Aryna Sabalenka headlines a strong field at Melbourne Park, joined by Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff as they look to set the tone for the year’s opening Grand Slam.
The women’s game has been more open than the men’s in recent years, and the trio has dominated the scene, claiming nine of the last 12 Grand Slam titles. Sabalenka will enter Melbourne aiming for her third Australian Open crown.
In addition to seeking her fifth Grand Slam overall, the Belarusian is eager to bounce back from last year’s surprising defeat to American Madison Keys in the final.
Sabalenka enters the tournament with momentum after reaching her third consecutive final in Brisbane, where she defeated Marta Kostyuk to win the title. Still, the 27-year-old said predicting Grand Slam outcomes is impossible.
"It's tennis, it's sport, and that's why it's so beautiful—you can't predict anything," Sabalenka said after her Brisbane victory.
"Every day you go out there and prove your level. The only thing I’m sure of is that I’ll be there, I’ll be fighting. My focus is on my game, on developing myself, and making sure that I’m strong and healthy."
Swiatek, who won her first Wimbledon crown last year, will aim to complete the career Grand Slam by capturing the Australian Open. A strong run could also move her closer to the world No. 1 ranking. However, the Pole, who reached the semi-finals last year, is keeping her focus on the present rather than rankings or milestones.
"Both of those things are big goals and hard to achieve," Swiatek said at the United Cup, where she lost to Gauff and Belinda Bencic.
"At a Grand Slam, you have to play great for two weeks, avoid bad days, and be consistent. Achieving number one is tough, especially with Aryna playing so well over the last few years. I’ll focus on myself because that’s the only way to go. I don’t need to put pressure on myself to achieve something in the next two weeks."
Gauff Brings the Swagger
Gauff enters Melbourne with confidence after winning the French Open last year, her second major title following the 2023 U.S. Open. The 21-year-old is focused on consistent performances at every Grand Slam.
"I want to go deep in all the Grand Slams this year," said the world No. 3.
"I’d like to touch the number one ranking—that would be cool. But mostly, it’s about being consistent throughout the year."
Other contenders include the fearless Keys, who found her best form in Melbourne last year, and fellow American Amanda Anisimova, who reached the Wimbledon and U.S. Open finals in 2025. Elena Rybakina, fresh off an unbeaten run to the WTA Finals title in Riyadh, is also a player to watch.
