Zach Ertz’s Season Ends with Torn ACL; Future Uncertain. Zach Ertz’s 2025 season is officially over after the veteran tight end suffered a torn ACL in his right knee. The Washington Commanders confirmed Monday that the injury occurred Sunday when Minnesota safety Jay Ward collided with a leaping Ertz as he tried to catch a pass.
The 35-year-old was assisted to a cart on the sideline, visibly emotional as teammates offered support. This marks a significant setback for Ertz, who has been a key presence in Washington’s offense during his second season with the team.
Ertz finished the season with 50 receptions for 504 yards and four touchdowns. With his one-year contract expiring, he is set to become a free agent, leaving his future in the NFL uncertain.
“He has meant a lot to our team, both on and off the field,” Washington coach Dan Quinn said. “He’s been an ideal teammate, helping set a standard about habits, and we’re all bummed for him.”
Ertz had not missed a game since joining the Commanders, though he missed at least six games in three of his previous four seasons with other teams. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, he won a Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2017 season, catching seven passes for 67 yards and a touchdown in the Eagles’ 41-33 victory over New England in Super Bowl LII.
With 825 career receptions, Ertz ranks fifth all-time among tight ends. Only Tony Gonzalez (1,325), Jason Witten (1,228), Antonio Gates (955), and Travis Kelce (1,064) have more, with the first three already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Kelce considered a likely future inductee.
Ertz also holds the single-season record for tight ends with 116 receptions in 2018. Over 181 regular-season games with Philadelphia (2012–21), Arizona (2021–23), and Washington (2024–25), he has amassed 8,592 yards and 57 touchdowns. -Field Level Media/Reuters
