Pope Leo paid tribute to his predecessor, Pope Francis, on the first anniversary of his death. Speaking aboard the papal plane to Equatorial Guinea, Leo called Francis a "great gift" to the Church and the world, and prayed he is "enjoying the mercy of the Lord." Francis, the first pope from the Americas, died one year ago at age 88 and is buried at Rome's Basilica of Saint Mary Major.
