Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth is embracing life in his Australian hometown, even if it comes with a few wild surprises.

In a recent episode of the comedy podcast, SmartLess, with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes, and Will Arnett, the Crime 101 star, 42, talked about surfing near his Byron Bay home and the risks that come with it.

“When I first moved to Byron Bay, there was a string of shark attacks—two deaths, then one guy survived, in the span of two weeks,” Hemsworth recalled. “One out the front of my house, 10 minutes south and five minutes north. I was like, ‘Where have I moved to? What have I done? This is crazy.’”

Despite the scary start, Hemsworth hasn’t let sharks stop him from surfing.

“I surf every day. I heard more people die in America by shaking a vending machine to get chocolate or whatever. I don’t know if it’s true” he said. Authorities even use helicopters and sirens to warn surfers but locals including Hemsworth often keep surfing.

Wildlife around his home isn’t limited to the ocean. Hemsworth revealed that snakes are common, but his children aren’t scared.

“We see a lot of snakes around our house, also a lot of big pythons, [which] are very territorial and they keep the bad ones away.  Hemsworth made it clear that “they’re not venomous.”

“My kids will go and grab them by the tail sometimes,” he said, leaving the hosts laughing.

He also shared a funny story about his close friend and American actor Matt Damon.

“He was asking all these questions before coming to Australia. The first day, he gets out of a car and steps straight on a snake. I’ve been here 42 years and never stepped on one. He’s a dummy,” Hemsworth joked.

Despite the occasional shark and snakes around his home, Hemsworth has never regretted leaving Los Angeles and moving to New South Wales in 2014.

He and his wife, Spanish model and actress Elsa Pataky, 49 moved their family to a big farm in Byron Bay to give their children a more private, nature-filled life.

For Hemsworth, life in Australia means enjoying the outdoors, surfing regularly, and giving his kids the freedom to explore.
