American singer and actor Justin Timberlake is taking legal action to keep footage of his 2024 Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) arrest private.
On March 2, Justin Timberlake’s lawyer filed a petition in Suffolk County Supreme Court to block the public release of bodycam footage from his June 18, 2024, arrest in Sag Harbor.
The petition addresses both the Village of Sag Harbor Police Department and its police chief and comes after multiple news organizations requested access to the video.
According to NBC, Timberlake’s legal team maintains that the footage shows more than just the arrest and includes private, sensitive moments.
“The bodycam footage captures approximately eight hours of continuous recording upon areas of Petitioner’s life and emotional state that have no relevance at all to Petitioner’s arrest,” the lawyer wrote in court documents.
They contend that making the video public would be an undue invasion of privacy and could seriously damage Timberlake’s personal and professional reputation.
The report also notes that Suffolk County acting Supreme Court Justice Joseph Farneti has postponed a ruling to allow discussions between the parties.
Toomey stated on Monday that the village and police department intended to release portions of the footage with redactions to protect privacy and sensitive investigative details, but Timberlake “sought a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction” to prevent it.
The Sag Harbor Village Police Department and its chief declined to comment. Mayor Thomas Gardella said the matter is ongoing and stressed the village’s commitment to transparency.
Timberlake, 45, was arrested in June 2024 for driving while intoxicated. He was released the following day and later faced one count of DWI.
After initially pleading not guilty, he reached a plea agreement in September 2024, pleading guilty to a reduced charge of driving while impaired. The agreement included a $500 fine and a requirement to complete 25 to 40 hours of community service.
