Inclusive cafe in Russia creates equal opportunities for baristas with mental health disabilities

Speciality coffee, beautifully plated dishes, a warm atmosphere, and a cozy design. At first glance, this café looks like any other in Moscow—a city where coffee culture has flourished in recent years.

But what truly sets this place apart is its team. Named “Different Grains,” the café provides meaningful employment to people with neurodevelopmental conditions, primarily autism. 

Today, more than 20 individuals work here, and many others come to practice, join workshops, or receive support in finding jobs in the open labour market.

“They may take longer to learn than most, but they have unique strengths,” says Yulia Volodina, the founder of the inclusive café. She highlights their ability to follow instructions meticulously and their natural empathy toward customers.

“The most valuable thing for them is the opportunity to work—to feel needed and important,” Volodina explains. She also emphasizes the social aspect of the project, as staff members work in groups, forming friendships and connections.

“When you work alone, you feel lonely and sad. But in a group, you feel calm and joyful. You become more active and positive,” says Dmitry, 21, who works as a waiter’s assistant and pastry cook.

Volodina admits that launching Moscow’s first café of this kind came with uncertainty.

“We were afraid that customers might react with aggression or avoid us altogether,” she recalls.

Those fears proved unfounded. In just three years, the café has welcomed more than 100,000 guests. It now boasts a 4.7 rating on Russia's Yandex Maps, with visitors praising the staff’s warmth and friendliness.
