Over 26 million trips made via ‘mini three links’ in 25 years; Xiamen Port’s new facial recognition system speeds travel for Taiwan residents.
Since its launch in January 2001, the "Mini Three Links" have facilitated more than 26 million passenger trips, according to data from Xiamen Border Inspection.
The "Mini Three Links" refer to direct trade, mail, and transport services between East China's Fujian Province and the Taiwan-administered Kinmen and Matsu islands.
Over the past 25 years, the route has grown from irregular passenger ferries to 36 daily "bus-like" sailings, with an abundant supply of tickets. It has become a key channel for personnel exchanges across the Taiwan Strait.
Recently, Xiamen Passenger Terminal upgraded its smart clearance channel with an improved facial recognition system. For the first time, the system now covers Taiwan residents holding a valid five-year mainland travel permit, making travel more convenient for Taiwan compatriots.
"The smart facial recognition system is very convenient, fast, and easy to use. Previously, the queues were very long, but now it's much easier for us," said Li Xinmei, a traveler from Taiwan.
"I find this very convenient because I can check in quickly, even when there are many passengers, and have my procedures handled efficiently," added Du Yujie, another Taiwan resident.
In less than two months since the smart customs clearance system was launched, more than 50,000 Taiwan residents have experienced the convenience of facial recognition for direct passage through Xiamen Port.
