The Seattle Mariners walked off the Oakland Athletics with a 5-4 victory Wednesday afternoon at T-Mobile Park, avoiding a series sweep with a dramatic finish in the bottom of the ninth. Josh Naylor delivered a two-out single to bring home Cal Raleigh, capping a late-game rally and securing the Mariners' third win in their last four games.
The Athletics had tied the score in the top of the ninth on a solo homer by Nick Kurtz off Mariners closer Andres Munoz (3-2). Munoz, who had blown the save opportunity, ultimately earned the victory in the hard-fought contest.
Raleigh, who homered for the third consecutive game, set the stage for the Mariners' comeback with a two-out single to center. Julio Rodríguez followed suit with another single to left, advancing Raleigh to second. Naylor then delivered the game-winning hit—a sharp liner to left off Athletics reliever Joel Kuhnel (0-1).
Both Raleigh and Naylor had standout performances at the plate, going 3-for-5, as the Mariners racked up a season-high 14 hits. On the mound, Seattle starter Logan Gilbert allowed six hits and three runs over four innings. Oakland's Aaron Civale matched him with six hits and three runs allowed, but pitched into the fifth, going 5 1/3 innings.
The Athletics jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, thanks in part to a rare hit by Carlos Cortes. After a leadoff walk to Kurtz and a single by Shea Langeliers, Cortes lined a 107.8-mph shot up the middle that hit Gilbert in the midsection and lodged inside his jersey. The umpires ruled it a hit, loading the bases. Following a brief check-up by the Mariners' trainer, Tyler Soderstrom's sacrifice fly and Jeff McNeil's two-out single brought in the first two runs of the game.
Seattle responded in the bottom of the first, as J.P. Crawford, Rodríguez, and Naylor loaded the bases with consecutive singles. Randy Arozarena then lifted a sacrifice fly to left, putting the Mariners on the board.
Oakland extended their lead to 3-1 in the third when Cortes reached on an infield single and later scored on Jacob Wilson's double. But the Mariners countered in the bottom of the inning when Raleigh launched a solo homer off Civale, bringing the score to 3-2.
Seattle tied the game at 3-3 in the sixth after Naylor led off with a single, and Mitch Garver's pinch-hit RBI double off reliever Brady Basso brought him home. The Mariners took the lead in the seventh, with Crawford scoring from first on Rodríguez's ground out after reaching on a single and advancing on a double by Raleigh.
The Mariners’ resilient performance at the plate and strong pitching in the later innings gave them the 5-4 win, helping them salvage the final game of the three-game series.
