NBA: Billy Donovan opts out as head coach of Bulls

Billy Donovan has decided not to continue with the Chicago Bulls as the team embarks on its latest rebuilding phase. After six seasons with the Bulls, Donovan, who posted a 226-256 record, has opted to part ways with the organization, leaving the coaching position vacant amidst a broader restructuring effort.

The decision comes as the Bulls are also seeking new leadership in the front office. Chicago is currently in the process of searching for a new president of basketball operations and general manager. In a statement released Tuesday, Donovan explained his decision:

“After a series of thoughtful and extensive discussions with ownership regarding the future of the organization, I have decided to step away as head coach of the Chicago Bulls to allow the search process to unfold,” said Donovan. “I believe it is in the best interest of the Bulls to allow the new leader to build out the staff as they see fit.”

Though the Bulls initially expressed a desire for Donovan to return, the veteran coach, who has an option for the 2026-27 season, chose not to exercise the clause. Donovan, 60, made it clear that he had no interest in moving to a front-office role, and there were no reports indicating that such a proposal was made by the team.

In the wake of Donovan’s departure, the Bulls are focused on finding the right individual to lead the organization. According to reports, the team plans to interview several prominent candidates, including Austin Brown, co-head of CAA's basketball division, and other key figures such as Matt Lloyd (Minnesota Timberwolves GM), Dennis Lindsey (Detroit Pistons senior VP), Bryson Graham (Atlanta Hawks senior VP), Mike Gansey (Cleveland Cavaliers GM), and Dave Telep (San Antonio Spurs assistant GM).

This shake-up comes just weeks after the Bulls made another significant change, parting ways with executive vice president of basketball operations Arturas Karnisovas and general manager Marc Eversley. Despite a lackluster 31-51 season, the Bulls are hopeful that new leadership can help turn the tide for the team as they look ahead to the May 10-17 NBA Draft Combine in Chicago.

Donovan thanked Bulls owner Jerry Reinsdorf and chairman Michael Reinsdorf for the opportunity and expressed his appreciation for their support throughout his tenure. In a statement, Jerry Reinsdorf praised Donovan’s professionalism and character:

“Billy Donovan is one of the finest people and coaches I have had the privilege of knowing and working with,” said Reinsdorf. “He brought class and genuine care to this organization that made a real impact on people. We wanted Billy to continue as our head coach. That was never in question. But through honest conversations, we all agreed that giving our new head of basketball operations the right to build out his staff was the most important thing for the future of the franchise. That’s the kind of person Billy is — he put the Bulls first.”

With a new direction on the horizon, the Bulls look to rebuild and redefine their future. -Field Level Media/Reuters
