Scoot Henderson delivered a season-high 31 points as the Portland Trail Blazers rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to edge past the shorthanded San Antonio Spurs, 106-103, on Tuesday in Game 2 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.
The Trail Blazers leveled the best-of-seven series at 1-1, with Game 3 scheduled for Friday and Game 4 on Sunday in Portland.
The game—and possibly the series—took a dramatic turn at the 8:57 mark of the second quarter with Portland leading 34-32. San Antonio's star, Victor Wembanyama, was injured during a drive to the basket, slamming his face onto the floor. Dazed and struggling to get up, Wembanyama was eventually escorted off the floor and ruled out for the remainder of the game due to concussion protocol. ESPN later confirmed that Wembanyama was diagnosed with a concussion, and his availability for Game 3 remains uncertain pending further tests.
The Spurs led by one point entering the fourth quarter but quickly surged ahead, scoring the first 13 points of the period to take a commanding 93-79 lead. However, Portland responded with a 7-0 run, capped by a layup from Jrue Holiday with 2:02 remaining, to pull within striking distance.
With just 12 seconds left, Robert Williams III grabbed an offensive rebound and dunked it home to give the Blazers a 104-101 advantage. After two free throws from Devin Vassell cut Portland's lead to one, Toumani Camara sealed the win by sinking two free throws of his own with 5.4 seconds remaining. Vassell had a chance to force overtime, but his three-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out, allowing the Blazers to seize home court advantage.
Holiday contributed 16 points for Portland, while Deni Avdija added 14. Williams finished with 11 points and Camara chipped in 10. Donovan Clingan was a force on the boards, pulling down 11 rebounds.
Stephon Castle led the Spurs with 18 points, and De'Aaron Fox added 17. Vassell also posted 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Dylan Harper and Luke Kornet each scored 10.
Castle's eight consecutive points helped fuel a 13-2 run that gave the Spurs a 28-27 lead at the end of the first quarter. Portland took advantage of Wembanyama's absence to build a 40-34 lead in the second, but the Spurs responded with a 13-2 run of their own to regain the lead at 47-42. A three-point play and two free throws by Avdija helped Portland tie the game at 57-all heading into halftime.
Henderson led all scorers with 19 points in the first half, while Avdija added 12 for the Blazers. Castle's 12 points led the Spurs in the opening period.
With the series now tied, both teams head to Portland with everything to play for. -Field Level Media/Reuters
