The war of words between the Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets is intensifying as their Western Conference first-round playoff series shifts to Minneapolis for Game 3 on Thursday night.
With the best-of-seven matchup tied at 1-1, both teams enter the contest with momentum after splitting the first two games in Denver. The Timberwolves responded to a Game 1 loss with a strong bounce-back performance in Game 2, setting the stage for a highly competitive showdown on their home floor.
Minnesota forward Jaden McDaniels added fuel to the rivalry following Game 2, openly criticizing Denver’s defense. He claimed the Nuggets lack rim protection and said the Timberwolves’ athleticism gives them a clear advantage, even against star center Nikola Jokic.
Denver interim head coach David Adelman dismissed the remarks with sarcasm, suggesting McDaniels’ comments were more suited for social media than the court. Nuggets guard Cam Johnson echoed that sentiment, noting that Minnesota has been vocal throughout the season and series, but emphasized that his team remains focused on its performance.
Despite the growing tension, the series itself has delivered closely contested action. Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards is averaging a team-high 26 points per game in the playoffs but has struggled with efficiency, shooting 38.6% from the field and 25% from beyond the arc. Julius Randle has provided steady support with 20 points per game, while McDaniels is contributing 15 points per contest.
For Denver, Jamal Murray has been the leading scorer in the series with 30 points per game, though he has faced shooting challenges, converting just 38.3% from the field and 27.3% from three-point range. Jokic continues to anchor the team with near triple-double averages of 24.5 points, 14 rebounds, and 9.5 assists, while Christian Braun has added 14 points per game and shot an efficient 50% from long distance.
The Nuggets remain confident heading into Game 3 despite their Game 2 loss. Johnson stressed the importance of resilience in the postseason, describing the need to bounce back as a fundamental part of playoff basketball.
Meanwhile, the Timberwolves will look to build on their home-court advantage, where they posted a 26-15 record during the regular season. Donte DiVincenzo could play a key role after hitting a crucial three-pointer late in Game 2, embracing the intensity and excitement that define playoff moments.
With both teams evenly matched and tensions rising, Game 3 promises to deliver another high-stakes chapter in what is quickly becoming a heated playoff rivalry.
