NBA: Wizards intend for coach Brian Keefe to return in 2026-27

Despite a rough record over the past two seasons, the Washington Wizards are committed to bringing back head coach Brian Keefe for the 2026-27 season, citing his strong player development and leadership in the ongoing rebuild. With key acquisitions and a promising draft, the team looks to bounce back and aim for a .500 season.

The Washington Wizards are set to bring back Brian Keefe as their head coach for the 2026-27 season, despite a tough two-plus years at the helm.

General Manager Will Dawkins expressed confidence in Keefe’s return during Thursday's end-of-season news conference. This comes after the Wizards posted a 43-160 record under Keefe's leadership, including a league-worst 17-65 record this past season.

While the Wizards continue to rebuild, Keefe, 50, has earned the respect of the front office for his strong player development skills. He has also gained the trust of his players in the locker room, making him a key part of the team’s long-term vision.

In recent months, the Wizards' front office has worked to improve the roster, putting together a team capable of competing for their first .500 season since 2017-18. Notable acquisitions include NBA stars Anthony Davis and Trae Young, both of whom are looking to bounce back after injury-plagued seasons.

Washington is also in a favorable position with a lottery pick in the upcoming NBA draft, which is expected to be deep with talent. Young players like Kyshawn George (14.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.5 assists) and Alex Sarr (16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds) are seen as cornerstones for the future.

Despite a tough finish to the season, where the Wizards went 1-26 in their final 27 games, the team is optimistic about the future under Keefe’s leadership.
