Anthony Markanich scored in the 32nd minute on Wednesday night as Minnesota United secured a 1-0 victory over FC Dallas, extending its winning streak to four matches.
Minnesota (5-2-2, 17 points) delivered a disciplined defensive performance against one of Major League Soccer’s most productive attacks. Dallas (3-2-4, 13 points) held a 16-5 advantage in shots but managed only three on target, repeatedly frustrated by Minnesota’s compact shape and organization.
Despite conceding more possession, Minnesota capitalized on one of its limited chances. Markanich latched onto a cross from Owen Gene, saw his initial effort saved by Michael Collodi, and then reacted quickly to slot the rebound between the goalkeeper and the left post.
Dallas increased its pressure late in the match, even after MLS scoring leader Petar Musa left in the 70th minute with what appeared to be leg cramps. Musa, who had scored nine goals in his first eight matches, was held to just two shots and none on target as Minnesota’s defense closely marked him throughout.
Goalkeeper Drake Callender earned the clean sheet for Minnesota, making two key first-half saves. He tipped Sebastian Ibeagha’s header over the bar in the sixth minute and later pushed Shaq Moore’s shot off the post in the 25th minute.
Logan Farrington provided an attacking spark after coming on in the 62nd minute for Dallas. He forced a save from Callender in the 79th minute and had another attempt in the 88th minute ruled offside.
In stoppage time, Dallas earned a late corner and sent Collodi forward in a final push for an equalizer, but Callender came off his line to safely collect the ball just before the final whistle.
The result marked Minnesota’s fourth win in its last five matches and ended Dallas’ five-game unbeaten run. It also handed Dallas its first home defeat of the season, dropping its record at home to 2-1-4.
