The Biggest Surprises in the First Round of the 2026 NFL Draft

The first round of the 2026 NFL Draft was filled with unexpected moves that shocked fans and analysts alike. Here are the biggest surprises from the opening round:

Titans Select Ohio State WR Carnell Tate at No. 4

When the Tennessee Titans made their pick at No. 4 overall, they surprised many by selecting wide receiver Carnell Tate from Ohio State. Most expected the Titans to address other positions of need, especially considering they heavily focused on wide receivers in the mid-rounds of the 2025 draft. Tate, however, fits perfectly into the Titans' wide receiver room. Alongside Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike, who have shown promise but not enough to elevate quarterback Cam Ward early, Tate could be the key to unlocking the offense. With a true No. 1 receiver alongside their quarterback, Tennessee may have found the perfect complement for their offensive future.

Chiefs Select LSU CB Mansoor Delane at No. 6

The Kansas City Chiefs shook things up with their pick at No. 6, selecting cornerback Mansoor Delane from LSU. While many expected the Chiefs to target an edge rusher after losing several cornerbacks in the offseason, the decision to move up for Delane was a surprise. Delane, known for his well-rounded coverage ability, will help solidify the Chiefs' secondary. Coach Andy Reid will be pleased with this pick, as it gives the defense much-needed stability on the outside, where the talent had been lacking.

Rams Select Alabama QB Ty Simpson at No. 13

The Los Angeles Rams made an unexpected move by selecting Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson at No. 13. The one-year starter at Alabama now finds himself in a prime position to develop under head coach Sean McVay and with veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford as a mentor. Simpson, who showed great promise during the 2025 college season, will have the opportunity to hone his skills in a stable environment. Although the Rams are viewed as contenders for a Super Bowl this season, this pick shows they are willing to be patient with Simpson’s development, even if it’s a bit surprising for a team looking to compete right away.

Vikings Select Florida DL Caleb Banks at No. 18

The Minnesota Vikings took a chance on Florida defensive lineman Caleb Banks at No. 18 overall, despite a foot injury that limited his 2025 season. Banks also suffered a foot injury at the NFL Scouting Combine, causing concerns that his stock might have dropped. However, the Vikings were undeterred, impressed by Banks' movement skills at the combine. Whether this pick becomes a major upside play or a misstep will depend on Banks' health and development moving forward. For now, Minnesota is banking on his potential.

Texans Select Georgia Tech G Keylan Rutledge at No. 26

In a surprising move, the Houston Texans traded up to select Georgia Tech guard Keylan Rutledge at No. 26. Rutledge wasn’t widely projected to be a first-round pick, but the Texans valued his aggressive style of play and impressive combine performance. This pick mirrors the New England Patriots' selection of Cole Strange in 2022, another lesser-known guard chosen earlier than expected. However, Rutledge comes with a much more battle-tested résumé and is known for his powerful hands and legs, which could make him a stronger presence on the Texans’ offensive line.

As the 2026 NFL season approaches, these selections could significantly impact the future of their respective teams. Whether they turn out to be savvy moves or cautionary tales, only time will tell.
