D.C. United ended a long scoring drought and rallied to earn a 4-4 draw in a high-energy match against the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night. The game featured a dramatic comeback, with Tai Baribo scoring his third goal of the season in the 80th minute to cap off an intense, back-and-forth battle.
Jackson Hopkins also played a key role for D.C. United, contributing a goal and an assist. Despite the tie, D.C. remains winless in its last five games, now sitting at 2-4-3 with 9 points on the season.
The match marked a rare offensive outburst for a team that had previously struggled with scoring, having recorded a league-low four goals before the match. Baribo has been the standout performer for D.C., scoring six of the team's eight goals this season.
The Red Bulls, who have struggled with consistency this season, took an early lead in the 15th minute. A well-executed pair of passes from Adri Mehmeti and Ronald Donkor set up Julian Hall for a low shot past D.C. keeper Sean Johnson, giving New York a 1-0 lead.
New York doubled their advantage just six minutes later. A cross from 17-year-old Matthew Dos Santos was deflected by D.C. defender Aaron Herrera, finding Donkor in the box. Donkor then slotted a low shot to the bottom left corner for a 2-0 lead.
D.C. United responded in the 37th minute, with Hopkins sending a cross from the right side to Baribo in the middle of the box. Baribo slid to meet the ball and fired a right-footed shot past Red Bulls keeper Ethan Horvath, pulling D.C. within one goal.
The Red Bulls extended their lead in the 52nd minute, when Emil Forsberg found Jorge Ruvalcaba sprinting down the left wing. Ruvalcaba evaded a defender and fired a stunning shot into the top right corner, giving New York a 3-1 advantage.
However, D.C. United quickly capitalized on New York's high defensive line. Joao Peglow won two balls in midfield, sending both forward for breakaway goals. Hopkins scored the first in the 56th minute to make it 3-2, and Baribo followed just three minutes later to tie the match at 3-3.
In the 71st minute, Ruvalcaba gave New York the lead again with another transition goal, but D.C. responded in the 80th minute. Baribo was in the right place at the right time, receiving a pass from Silvan Hefti and converting from close range to make it 4-4.
In stoppage time, D.C. had a potential game-winner from Jacob Murrell, but his goal was disallowed after a foul was called for pushing a defender before scoring.
The match ended in a 4-4 draw, leaving both teams with mixed emotions. The Red Bulls, now at 3-3-3 with 12 points, have only one win in their last seven matches. Despite their defensive struggles, D.C. United can take some comfort from their offensive revival in this thrilling encounter.
