SOCCER: Liverpool boss Slot laments missed chances in Champions League exit

LIVERPOOL, England – Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his frustration following his side’s 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday, a result that sealed a 4-0 aggregate loss and sent them crashing out of the Champions League. The Dutch manager said the team's inability to convert chances into goals had once again been exposed, marking a disappointing conclusion to their European campaign.

Despite dominating possession with 53% and creating 21 attempts on goal to PSG’s 12, along with eight corners compared to just two for the visitors, it was PSG who found the net. Ousmane Dembélé struck twice in the second half, securing the defending champions' place in the semi-finals.

“Unfortunately, it's one of the many examples this season where we weren't able to score from the many chances we had,” Slot said after the match. "Again, we were so far underperforming in terms of expected goals (xG of 1.94), and that’s been an ongoing issue for us throughout the season.”

Slot also referenced a controversial VAR decision that overturned a penalty awarded for a foul on Alexis Mac Allister. The decision, alongside a potentially serious injury to French forward Hugo Ekitike, added to the sense of frustration surrounding the loss.

"Another intervention from VAR which wasn't in our favour, and that's not the first time this season," Slot remarked. “We were very disappointed because there were moments in the second half where you could feel that if we scored, it could have turned into something special.”

The match saw the return of Swedish striker Alexander Isak, who was handed a first start since recovering from a broken leg in December. Slot highlighted how Isak’s presence in the squad had been sorely missed this season, with the striker coming close to scoring twice.

“He was twice close to a goal, and that's why you play a striker of his level,” Slot explained. “If I thought he wasn't ready, I wouldn't have played him.”

While acknowledging that Isak’s absence had been a factor in Liverpool’s struggles in front of goal, Slot remained hopeful about the future. “The future looks very bright for this team and this club because we've shown that we can compete with the champions of Europe and dominate them in our stadium,” he said. “Not many teams can be dominant against Paris Saint-Germain and create so many chances like we did. But, yeah, chances are one thing, scoring is another.”

As Liverpool now shifts focus to securing a Champions League spot for next season, they will look to bounce back in the Premier League. The Reds, currently fifth in the standings, will face rivals Everton on Sunday at their new stadium.
