Senator Mark Villar said transport and fisheries workers are among the most vulnerable sectors requiring assistance during the ongoing oil and energy crisis.

Villar underscored the need for government support for workers who continue to serve the public despite rising costs and economic difficulties.

He emphasized that long-term policy solutions are needed to strengthen support systems for transport workers and fisherfolk.

These solutions include improving access to government aid and implementing measures to cushion the impact of fluctuating fuel prices.

During a recent Senate Committee on Agriculture hearing, lawmakers and sector representatives highlighted the worsening conditions currently facing the fisheries industry.

Local fisherfolk have reported steep declines in income. These losses are primarily due to rising fuel prices and increasing operational expenses, which have made many fishing trips no longer viable.

Fewer boats are going out to sea, leading to a reduced fish supply in the market and added pressure on food security.

Villar stressed that sustained government intervention is essential to maintain food security and support livelihood stability.

“We hope for the continued timely assistance for the agri-fisheries sector to ensure food supply stability and fair market prices,” Villar said during an aid distribution program in Apalit, Pampanga.

Villar distributed rice and grocery packs to jeepney drivers and fisherfolk under the MARKalinga Welfare Assistance Program.

“This is our way of recognizing the dedication of our jeepney drivers and fisherfolk who continue to serve the public every day despite the difficulties they face.
